Scoring Philosophy

The scoring system is designed around three principles:

How Combos Work

• Match within ~2 seconds of your previous match to continue the combo
• Each consecutive match increases the combo counter: x2, x3, x4, and so on
• The base tile value is multiplied by the current combo level
• If you pause too long between matches, the combo resets to x1

Combo Math Example

Imagine matching these tiles rapidly in sequence:

1. Match Dots (4 pts x 1) = 4 points
2. Match Bamboo within 2s (6 pts x 2) = 12 points
3. Match Dragon within 2s (10 pts x 3) = 30 points
4. Match Wind within 2s (8 pts x 4) = 32 points

Total from this 4-combo sequence: 78 points (compared to 28 without combos).

Chain Bonus

The chain bonus rewards matching tiles from the same suit consecutively. If you match Bamboo tiles and then immediately match more Bamboo tiles, you earn a chain bonus on top of the regular combo multiplier.

Chain Rules

• Match 2+ pairs of the same suit type in a row to trigger a chain
• Chain bonus adds extra points proportional to the chain length
• Chain bonuses stack with combo multipliers for maximum points
• Chains break when you match a different tile type

Win Bonuses

Completing the board earns you significant bonus points. Multiple bonuses can stack:

If you clear the board without using either undo or shuffle, you earn all three bonuses: +800 total bonus points. This is a substantial addition to your score and represents the cleanest possible win.

Time Factor

The time factor rewards faster completions. The faster you clear the board, the higher your time bonus. This creates an interesting tension with the no-undo and no-shuffle bonuses — playing fast risks mistakes, but playing carefully takes more time.

How Time Scoring Works

• The timer starts when you make your first match
• Faster completion times earn a larger time bonus
• The time bonus is calculated as a multiplier on your accumulated points
• There's no penalty for taking time — the bonus just gets smaller

Strategy: Maximizing Your Score

To achieve the highest possible scores, combine these techniques:

1. Pre-Scan for Combos

Before your first match, identify clusters of 3-4 matches you can execute rapidly. Start with these pre-planned combo sequences for a strong opening.

2. Target High-Value Tiles in Combos

When building combos, try to include Dragon (10 pts), Flower (12 pts), and Season (14 pts) matches. These high-value tiles benefit most from combo multipliers.

3. Build Suit Chains

Look for opportunities to match 2-3 pairs of the same suit in rapid succession to trigger chain bonuses on top of combos.

4. Play Clean

Aim for the no-undo and no-shuffle bonuses (+300 combined). Use the three-of-a-kind technique and careful planning to avoid needing these features.

5. Don't Stall

Keep your momentum up. Long pauses between matches not only break combos but reduce your time bonus. If you need to think, make it quick — or plan while executing your current combo.

Scoring in Daily Challenges

The Daily Mahjong Challenge uses the same scoring system, but with an added competitive element: everyone plays the same board. This means:

• Scores are directly comparable — you can see how you stack up against other players
• Each layout has its own scoring characteristics (easy layouts like Garden yield higher combo scores; hard layouts like Temple reward patient play)
• Exploring multiple layouts each day gives you the most comprehensive practice
• Your best scores contribute to your overall statistics and streaks

Understanding the scoring system gives you an edge in daily challenges. While other players might rush or play randomly, you can strategically maximize every match for competitive scores.
