Try Mahjong

Credits & Attributions

Try Mahjong is built on the work of dozens of people across open-source projects and two decades of community layout-making. This page names the creators behind everything you see on the board, links back to their original sources, and tells you how to reach us if you're one of them and want something changed or removed.

Are you a layout creator or tile artist listed below?

Thank you for the work — your designs are making people's days a little lighter. If you'd like the attribution changed, your contact details added, or a specific layout / asset removed, just email [email protected] (or use the Report link on any layout's card in the picker). We'll act on requests quickly — usually same-day.

Mahjong Tile Graphics

Default set — DemChing (CC BY-SA 4.0)

The default 167-tile Mahjong artwork (used in all non-cultural themes) is DemChing's Mahjong asset pack, purchased from demching.itch.io/mahjong. DemChing's pack is itself a derivative of the SVG tile set by Cangjie6, published on Wikimedia Commons. Both works are under CC BY-SA 4.0. Full provenance + license text at /assets/mahjong/LICENSE.txt.

Cultural sets — Royal Graphics Resources

The five themed tile sets — China, India, Japan, Korea, Medieval Europe — come from the "Mahjong Premium Masterpack" by Royal Graphics Resources, purchased from royalgraphicsresources.itch.io/mahjong-premium-masterpack. Used under Royal Graphics' custom commercial-use license (full terms), which permits modification and embedding in commercial products. Each set's raw PNGs are composed into a single sprite atlas at build time so we don't serve the pack file-by-file.

Mahjong Layouts

Try Mahjong ships roughly 850 board layouts, drawn from open-source projects and long-running community archives. Every layout's author is shown on its card in the layout picker. We deliberately exclude the Kyodai Mahjongg publisher's own material (CynaGames' cyna.net distribution and the kyodaimahjongg.weebly.com fan site) to respect the Kyodai trademark and copyright, even though those files use the same .lay format as the community packs below.

Verified open-source

Community archives

The bulk of the catalog comes from long-standing Kyodai-format community packs that were freely shared on personal sites and aggregator portals through the 2000s and 2010s. Most were distributed as "freeware" without a formal license statement. We include them in good faith with per-author attribution and the one-click removal path above.

Layout Creators

Named authors whose work appears on the board, with the number of their layouts we ship and the archive(s) they appeared in. If you are one of these creators or know someone who should be contacted about a missing or incorrect credit, please email [email protected].

Aggregator

Layout files were located via the mahseum archive (MIT, © 2024 ffalt), which catalogues many open-source and community mahjong layout packs. The GPL-licensed subsets ship with their license texts bundled at /mahjong-layouts/LICENSES/.
