General approach:
Most versions offer hints:
Our Mahjong Solitaire uses a dynamic scoring system that rewards strategic tile selection and consistent play.
Each match earns points based on two factors: the tile type value and the number of tiles remaining on the board. The formula is:
Base Points = Tile Value × Tiles Remaining
This means early matches (when more tiles remain) are worth more points, rewarding aggressive play from the start.
Rarer tile types are worth more points per match:
Characters: 2 points per tile remaining
Dots (Circles): 4 points per tile remaining
Bamboos: 6 points per tile remaining
Winds: 8 points per tile remaining
Dragons: 10 points per tile remaining
Flowers: 12 points per tile remaining
Seasons: 14 points per tile remaining (highest value!)Match tiles of the same suit consecutively to build a chain multiplier:
The chain resets when you match a different suit. Look for opportunities to match several pairs of the same suit in a row for big point bonuses.
Important distinction: Mahjong Solitaire is NOT traditional Mahjong:
No! Many Mahjong layouts are unwinnable:
The most iconic layout, resembling a turtle shell with tall center and sloping edges.
Symmetrical pyramid shape with tiles stacked in decreasing layers.
Multiple separated sections connected by "bridges" of tiles.
Various animal and symbolic shapes for variety.
A tile is free if: (1) No tiles are on top of it, AND (2) At least one side (left or right) is completely exposed with no adjacent tiles. Both conditions must be met.
Yes! The four Season tiles (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) are wild - any can match any other Season tile. Same with the four Flower tiles.
Both tiles must be "free" according to the rules. Check if each tile has at least one free side and no tiles on top. Often one tile is blocked by adjacent tiles.
No! Traditional Mahjong is a 4-player strategy game. Mahjong Solitaire is a single-player matching puzzle that uses Mahjong tiles. They share tile designs but are completely different games.
